Ulmus, Barbaresco 2019

Ulmus is a small producer operating in the Barbaresco zone of Piedmont, focusing on Nebbiolo from old-vine sites and committed to traditional methods. Their approach blends respect for Piedmontese viticultural heritage with careful vineyard management and moderate yields, aiming to express the terroir of Barbaresco with clarity, elegance and age-worthy structure. Bright garnet with brick hues at the rim. The 2019 vintage shows aromas of dried cherry, wild cranberry, liquorice root, undergrowth and rose petal. On the palate: firm tannins carry red berry and tar-tinged flavours, with hints of leather, dried herbs and underbrush. High acidity balances the structure, leading to a lingering finish of sour cherry and earth. A serious, classic-style Barbaresco that benefits from decanting and will evolve beautifully over the next 5–10 years.
